Does SatFish cover my area?
SatFish currently covers the continental United States, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and parts of Mexico including Baja, Puerto Vallarta, and the Yucutan Peninsula. Please visit our Regions section for a map and full list of our coverage area.
If you don’t see your area listed, please drop us a line to request it!
How does it work offshore? Don’t I need wifi or cell service to use it?
We specifically built the mobile app for use offshore and out of range of cell or data service. Simply load up your region and any layers you want to use while you’re at the dock or marina with data access, then put your device into “airplane mode” and Satfish mobile app will automatically re-load with all your data saved to your device for offline use! Does SatFish work on Garmin / Simrad / Furuno / other chartplotters?
SatFish works as a web-based map application on your computer or laptop and as a mobile app for iOS and Android. We do not currently offer maps, apps, or overlays for chartplotters.
Many of our users mount a tablet such as an iPad on their helm to be able to use SatFish side-by-side with their other electronics and they report this works great!
Why isn’t there a new SST or Chlorophyll shot for my region today?
Most likely, it’s just too cloudy!
The satellites that process our high-definition sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll data can’t “see” the ocean surface through clouds, smoke, fog, or intense sun glare. They need clear skies in order to read the ocean surface and collect temperature and water color information so that we can process it into our high-def images.
A quick way to check is to use our True Color satellite imagery layer. Are all the recent satellite photos covered in clouds? That means we won’t be able to get any usable temperature or chlorophyll data from those satellite passes that day.
Sometimes it will be socked-in cloudy for a day or more, which means we won’t be able to get any high-def shots that day. But not to fear – those days are perfect to use our Cloud-Free SST, 3-day Composite SST, and 1-day or 3-day Composite Chlorophyll charts! That way, you can still get a general idea of where the temps are ideal for your target species and where to start looking for temp and color breaks that gather life and gamefish.
And when the skies do clear up, our processing software will still be running full-speed to bring you the latest high-def shots as soon as the data are available.
Why are there blank spots on the map where temperature is missing?
The satellites that process our high-definition sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll data can’t “see” the ocean surface through clouds, smoke, fog, or intense sun glare. They need clear skies in order to read the ocean surface and collect temperature and water color information so that we can process it into our high-def images.
In some regions, especially in lower latitudes closer to the equator, a few satellites don’t quite cover the entire globe when they pass overhead. Those data gaps will also show up as blank spots on the map and are easy to spot as sharp straight diagonal lines where the data ends.
There may also be areas where the glare from the sun is just too strong and it corrupts the data – we filter all that out for you. But that’s why we collect data from multiple satellites every day, to make sure we still get full coverage of your region even when one satellite misses a section.
How often do you update?
SatFish uses many different data sources with different update schedules.
High-Def SST & Raw SST: Every 4-8 hours depending on cloud cover
Cloud-Free SST & 3-day Composite SST: 1x / day
High-Def Chlorophyll: 2-3 shots / day depending on cloud cover, usually available by early evening
1-day & 3-day Composite Chlorophyll: 1x / day
True Color Satellite Imagery: 2-3 shots / day, usually available by early evening
Altimetry & Currents: 1x / day
5-day Wind Forecast: Updated every 6 hours
Buoy Data: Updated every hour
How Do I Update or Cancel My Subscription/Trial?
